Workplace Bullying Training
Workplace bullying happens often, and it is very detrimental to team morale, productivity, and even the mental health of employees. Being bullied in the workplace may not sound possible, since we tend to associate bullies with the schoolyard, and almost always someone who is physically larger. Workplace bullying takes place in a more psychological manner, and that can be much more damaging to an individual than any physical blow. This training course is therefore set to assist employers in detecting and quashing signs of workplace bullying, and to train employees to avoid it and report those who do such things.
A bully has no place in any workplace, and no self-respecting company will tolerate such behaviour. The first thing any company should prioritise is the health and safety of its workers, and that is the responsibility of both employer and employee. In a team, all of its members are responsible for each other; employers for their employees, employees for other employees, and employees for their employers. These methods will train team members to notice the signs of bullying when they surface, to understand how it will impact the workplace if it is not addressed, and how to address it appropriately. This training course is crucial in building a harmonious and welcoming work environment, and encouraging a culture of teamwork and respect for other professionals, even the inexperienced. Workplace Bullying Training Outline
Specific learning objectives include:
- Describe what bullying is and isn’t
- Understand the costs of bullying to people and organizations
- Identify bullying behaviors and the reasons behind them
- Know some strategies to prevent bullying and Understand what role you may play
- Know some ways to protect yourself from bullying
- Know what to do if you are bullied
- Identify appropriate solutions for a Bullying incident (inside and outside the organization)
- Help out with creating an anti-bullying policy
We develop the first part of the day getting to know participants and discussing what’s going to occur during the workshop. Students will also have a chance to identify their personal learning goals.
To start, you will be certain participants are on the same page when it comes to talking about bullying. We’ll also offer some data from the Workplace Bullying Institute’s 2010 survey.
Why Bullies Do What They Can
This session will explore the roots of bullying behavior and explore what it can look like. Various kinds of bullying are also defined.
Building a Shield Against Bullies
This session provides participants four tools to protect themselves against bullying. Participants will also learn about distorted thinking.
What To Do When It Happens to You
Next, Participants will learn long-term and short-term strategies for coping with and addressing bullying.
What To Do If You See Bullying
Sadly, Many people who see bullying do not do anything. This session will explore why and give participants a few things to do if they witness bullying.
Creating an Anti-Bullying Workplace
In this session, participants will learn about the key parts to anti-bullying policy, in addition to how to enforce and track it. Participants will also work on an action plan for their office.
The Law on Bullying
To conclude the program, participants will look at anti-bullying laws across the world.
At the end of the day, students will have a chance to ask questions and fill out an action plan.
Notice the Signs
Workplace bullying is noticeably performed in many ways, but they always inflict psychological or social damage. You are being bullied in the workplace if any of the following have happened to you: false rumours have been spread about you, your privacy is invaded, your workmates take credit for your work, you are constantly being screamed at or insulted, you have been sabotaged to make meeting your objectives harder, and even literal physical abuse. For the employee, it is critical to have a sense of self-respect and notice these signs if they happen. For the employer, it is even more so critical to notice, on top of their responsibility to do something about workplace bullying, as required by the Occupational Health and Safety laws. Employers are required to intervene in events when the employee is being bullied, and is not responding appropriately to it.
Understand the Impact of Bullying on the Individual and the Workplace
No matter how you term it, a hostile environment means that the business will suffer. Cases of workplace bullying that are not appropriately addressed will often see the bullying continue, or it will stop for a while, and then relapse. In worse cases, it will directly affect the victim, and in doing so, affect the company. Bullied workers tend to have lower morale, lower productivity, and may even resort to absenteeism, as a result of being bullied. It makes the victim feel angry, helpless, frustrated, and even worthless to the company, and this does not even account for psychosomatic symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, loss of appetite and social withdrawal. If left completely unaddressed, legal intervention may claim worker’s compensation for the victim, costing the company money. It may even result in high rates of turnover, and a tarnished reputation, leading to fewer applicants and employees to work with. It is not a pleasant idea, and an even less pleasant reality. This urges us to remember that bullying is unacceptable behaviour at any age, especially among working adults, and that should we find it, it should be dealt with accordingly and swiftly.
Address the Issue
The issue of bullying can be addressed a number of ways in the workplace. First, the victim can try firmly, but politely telling the aggressor to stop their behaviour. This does not always work, but it is a proactive approach, and it should, optimistically speaking, shut down the issue before it escalates. However, if it escalates, as it typically does, the second option is to seek intervention from management, and intervention must be made by management to sanction such behaviour accordingly. It also helps the victim’s case with management if he or she documents evidence of the offender’s harassment, and then presents it to the appropriate superiors. This option itself branches out to management, based on company policy; they can fine the offender, suspend the offender from work, or even fire the offender from the company. It should be said that some companies have management that hesitate to fire strong performers from their company, even if they are bullies, because they’re afraid the company’s performance will drop, or that firing someone will tarnish their reputation, especially if it’s a capable employee. This is found to be untrue, because while the company’s performance may drop for a while because they lost a powerful member, hard work and teamwork on the part of the other employees will easily make up that deficiency, as a team will always overpower an individual. Always remember that two or more of you standing up to a bully means that you outnumber him or her, and no single bully can beat coordinated teamwork, no matter how good of a performer he or she is. However, if all else fails, and both management and victim have failed to stop the aggressor, the best thing for the victim to do is resign from the company and work elsewhere. If you see someone in your workplace being bullied, stand up to the bully. No job is worth compromising an individual’s physical, mental or emotional health because of a bully who is poorly adjusted to adulthood. Practice open communication with your superiors, and with people in the workplace that you can trust, and keeping cool while under attack from a bully. This session helps participants to learn how and what to do if they see or feel they are being bullied.
