How to identify your strengths and weaknesses

You don’t have to feel bad about yourself if you are thinking of starting your own business. This is a process that will help you understand your strengths and weaknesses, as well as where you need to improve.

1. First, create two lists

Prior to using outside resources to identify your strengths or weaknesses, spend 30 minutes creating two lists.

Your business goals or entrepreneurial goals will be the focus of your first list. It could be called “Skills Required to Succeed”. Don’t worry if you haven’t thought of every skill that will help your business succeed. This is a general overview and not intended to be comprehensive. It may include things such as “an understanding the market”, “business development,” or “product knowledge.” You can also add skills to your list based on your business. Next, mark the skills you already have and place a star next the ones you believe you will need. You can then put this list aside and come back to it later.

You must be honest about yourself when creating the next list. There are two columns you can use, one called “Strengths” the other “Weaknesses”. Depending on who you are, it will be easier to fill out one of these columns. I encourage you to try your best to be objective. Do not beat yourself up about your major flaws and don’t underestimate how strong you are. Write them down and move on.

2. Talk to people you trust

You may have a biased view of yourself when you create a list of your strengths and weaknesses. People tend to think too highly or too low of themselves.

Think of three to five people who you trust and have lived or worked with you for a long time. People who have seen your character and behaviour in different situations are important. Most people will have a partner, best friend, mentor, advisor, or parent.

It’s not enough to think about the length of your relationships. It is important to consider whether you trust and value their opinions. Friends and family members may be biased and think that everything you do is great. Or they have had negative and destructive opinions in the past. Choose people with a track record of being helpful and balanced, even when you don’t want them to.

You can add more information to both lists as you get feedback. You will see that many of your strengths and weaknesses are confirmed by people you trust. Others that you have not listed are less important to those who have had time with you.

3. Do a personality assessment

Personality tests, which are a useful tool to identify your strengths and weaknesses, can be used in addition to the time spent thinking about yourself and what opinions you have gotten from others.

4. Explore new ideas

You might not have the experience to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes, it’s difficult to identify your strengths and weaknesses if you don’t have enough experience.

You can identify your strengths and weaknesses and connect them to certain behaviours and habits. You can then identify which are most beneficial and what ones will help you become the person you desire to be.

It’s not a one-time task to list your strengths and weaknesses. To keep track of your progress, you should revisit your list frequently. You will likely see your strengths and weaknesses change over time so it is important to review your progress regularly.
