What motivates their creation and utilisation? To shed light on these questions lets explore two types of models – empirical – along with the driving forces behind them.

1. Conceptual Models

What do they entail?

Conceptual models, also referred to as models represent ideas or systems in a manner. They serve as frameworks that aid in conceptualising phenomena often rooted in theory. For example Maslows hierarchy of needs is a model that offers a structure for understanding motivation.

Key Driving Force;

The primary motivation, behind models lies in the pursuit of comprehension. These models assist in condensing multifaceted realities into manageable structures.

By organising our thoughts or theories into a model we can gain clarity. Better understand, predict or even manipulate phenomena.

2. Empirical Models

What are they?

Models are based on observations and data. These models are created using real world observations. Tested against data. For example in the field of economics an empirical model that predicts inflation rates based on variables would be considered empirical if it is derived from analysing economic data.

Driving Force;

The driving force, behind models is the desire to validate or challenge existing theories. Essentially empirical models act as a bridge between theory and reality. By aligning these models with data we aim to test the accuracy and reliability of our theories or assumptions. The ultimate goal is often prediction – using past and present data to anticipate events or trends.

The. Balance;

While these two types of models may seem distinct at glance they are often intertwined. A conceptual model can provide the foundation for creating models while empirical findings can lead to refinements or significant changes in conceptual frameworks.

For instance a conceptual model, on climate change might propose that increasing carbon dioxide levels contribute to warming.

An empirical model would then use data from the world, such, as temperature records and measurements of carbon dioxide to test this idea. Based on the findings from this analysis the conceptual model might be adjusted, expanded or even disproven.
