Introduction, to Reinforcement Theory

The theory of reinforcement is a concept in the field of sciences. It proposes that human behaviour can be shaped and influenced through the use of rewards and consequences. Essentially it involves providing reinforcement for desired behaviours and negative reinforcement for behaviours. This theory has been widely recognised for its effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes in situations.

Historical Perspective on Reinforcement Theory

In 199 E.L. Thorndike introduced the Law of Effects which laid the foundation for this theory. According to this principle behaviours that result in outcomes are more likely to be repeated because they are seen as favourable while actions that lead to consequences are less likely to be repeated because they are considered unfavourable. B.F. Skinner further expanded on this idea by emphasizing that behaviour is influenced by the consequences it produces. He suggested that an individuals response is shaped by the outcomes of their actions.

Despite some criticisms labeling conditioning as manipulative Skinner clarified his position, on this matter. He argued that when individuals realise that certain actions lead to consequences they naturally tend to avoid repeating those actions especially when faced with repercussions or punishments.

An Approach, to Changing Behaviour

While Reinforcement Theory is widely accepted as the foundation for behaviour modification it’s important to approach its application with careful consideration. The concept is simple; negative behaviours lead to outcomes, which deter individuals from repeating those behaviours.

To effectively change behaviour follow these four steps;

1.Identify the behaviour that requires modification.

2. Keep track of how this undesired behaviour occurs.

3. Adjust the consequences or outcomes associated with this behaviour. 

4.If initial interventions prove ineffective escalate the severity of the consequences.

For example lets consider a situation involving Worker A and Worker B who frequently engage in distracting conversations. Despite these interruptions Worker A manages to stay productive while Worker B struggles to concentrate. To address this issue;

Initially, a directive requesting both workers to return to their workstations may be sufficient.

If distractions persist stringent measures like implementing monitoring software can be considered to ensure employees remain focused on their tasks.

The key lies in assessing and adapting methods of behaviour modification to strike a balance.
