Ethical code of conduct at work

A code of ethics or professional conduct describes the ethical principles that guide decisions and behaviour in an organisation. These codes provide guidance on how to handle issues such as harassment, safety and conflicts of interests.

A code of ethics can be broad and gives employees and members an idea of acceptable behaviour and how to encourage them at work. A code of conduct, however, is more specific. It outlines how employees and members should behave in certain situations.

Businesses will often combine these two documents to create one document, as they have significant overlap. Two policies are rare in a business. Although they may be technically distinct documents, employees will be able to recall important points about conduct and ethics much easier if they only have one document.

1. Include everyone.

We are open to all identities and backgrounds. This includes members of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, races, ethnicities, cultures, national origins, social and economical classes, educational level and color, as well as those with sex, gender, age, size and family status.

2. Take care.

To produce the best possible work for our company, we all depend on one another. You can have an impact on clients and colleagues by making decisions.

3. Respect others.

While we may not all agree on everything, disagreement does not excuse disrespectful behaviour. All people will experience frustration at times, but that doesn’t mean we should allow it to become personal attacks. A work environment that makes people feel threatened or uncomfortable is not conducive to creativity or productivity.

4. Be careful with your words

Be professional. Always be kind to others. Don’t insult or make others feel inferior. Harassment or exclusionary behaviour is not acceptable. This includes but isn’t limited to:

  • Menaces of violence
  • Language and jokes that discriminate
  • Sharing explicit or violent material via electronic devices, or any other means.
  • Insults to others, particularly if they are racist or sexist.
  • Unwelcome sexual attention
  • Advocate for or encourage any of the behaviour mentioned above.

5. Don’t harass.

If someone asks you to do something, stop it. Try to understand why we disagree. Disagreements and differences of opinion are almost inevitable. It is crucial that differences of opinion and views are resolved constructively.

6. Turn your differences into strengths

Diversity can be a strength. Different perspectives can help solve problems and generate new ideas. It doesn’t necessarily mean you are wrong if you don’t understand why others hold a certain view. Remember that everyone makes mistakes and that blaming others won’t get you anywhere. Instead, learn from your mistakes and focus on solving problems.

1. The work environment.

Employees must act with integrity, follow laws, keep a professional environment, and adhere to company policies. Customers, coworkers, and partners should be treated ethically at all costs.

2. Conflicts of interests

Reputation of a company is dependent on its employees’ integrity and actions. It is important that employees avoid any relationships or activities that could hurt their ability to make fair and objective decisions.

3. Protection of company assets

Employees must take steps to safeguard company assets (physical, intellectual, or electronic)

4. Anti-bribery, corruption

Trustworthiness and good reputation are dependent on a company’s integrity. Employees must do their job honestly, legally, and fairly.

5. Attendance and punctuality

Employees must be punctual and regular in attendance. This means that employees must be available to work at the start of each day. Other employees and the company are affected by tardiness and absenteeism.

6. Services are interrupted

Social workers must make every effort to ensure continuity in services in the event of disruptions or unavailability in electronic communication, relocation, illness or death.

7. General harassment and sexual harassment

The company is committed in providing an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. No comments, actions, words, jokes or remarks based on an individual’s sex or race, ethnicity or age, religion or any other legally protected characteristic will be tolerated.

8. Use your cell phone at work

It is forbidden to use your cell phone during work hours, except in emergency situations.

9. Dress code

When employees interact with customers and potential customers, it is essential to present a professional image. Employees must be professionally dressed and well-groomed for their job.

10. Abusive of substances

It is forbidden to manufacture, distribute, possess, sell, or buy controlled substances of abuse on company properties. It is illegal to be under the influence or any other substances of abuse on company property. Prescription drugs that cause impairment of performance are prohibited from working.

11. Tobacco products.

It is strictly forbidden to use tobacco products on company property outside of the permitted areas.

12. Internet usage at work

When necessary, employees may access the Internet to obtain information required to run a company’s business. The company’s computer network must not be disrupted or damaged by the Internet. The Internet should not be used to hinder an employee’s productivity.
