Balance is the foundation of assertiveness. This requires you to be open about your needs and desires while also considering the rights, needs and wants of others. You are assertive and you can use this to communicate your points clearly, fairly and with empathy.

Aggressive behavior is built on winning. Aggressive behavior is based on winning. If you are aggressive, you will use power that is not in your best interest. Sometimes you may appear pushy, or even bullying. You will take what you want often without asking.

You can tell others what you really think and feel. And you can also set boundaries when necessary. To communicate effectively, you just have to be assertive.

When you are able to confidently communicate your needs and opinions in an honest, fair, and calm manner, while also considering the views and needs of others, it is called assertive communication.

Assertive communication allows you to communicate positive and negative feelings and ideas in an honest, open, and direct manner. It respects the rights of others while recognising our own rights. It allows us to be responsible for our actions and ourselves without having to judge or blame others.

For emerging leaders, managers and introverts, assertive communication is essential. You can communicate confidently and say no without feeling guilty.

How to be more assertive

It is about having the right attitude and communication skills to be assertive. Certain people are more confident in assertiveness than others. Others require more practice. Everyone can improve.

Although it’s not easy to be assertive, it is possible. It’s possible to become more assertive in your workplace or disposition if you are more passive or aggressive than assertive.

Assertive Communication Techniques

Communicating your views and needs at work is important, but many people find it difficult. They may appear too passive or aggressive. To be more assertive, there are simple and effective communication methods that you can employ. These are:

  • Use “I” statements : Use “I want”, I need, or “I feel” statements to communicate basic assertions clearly.
  • Empathy : Try to understand and recognise the perspective of the other person. After taking her perspective into account, you can then express your needs to her.
  • Repeated Assertion (the “broken record”) : Make sure you have a message ready in advance. Be careful when using the broken record technique. It’s fine to use it to protect yourself against exploitation. It can be manipulative or dishonest if it’s used to bully someone into doing something that is against their best interests.
  • Be aware of your body language : Communication is more than words. Your body language can tell a lot about your intentions.
  • Fogging: This technique makes it easy to accept criticism without becoming defensive or anxious, and also allows you not to be rewarded for manipulative criticism.
  • Avoid exaggerating using words : This include words such as always or never. You might say, “You are 20 minutes behind and it is the third week in a row,” rather than “You’re always late!”
  • Be able to communicate facts and not judgments : You might say, “This report is missing important information” instead of “You did a poor job again.”
  • Practice : Practice assertiveness in many situations. Do not forget to praise your efforts.

You can feel more confident by using assertiveness. Use assertiveness to your advantage, use calm repetition and speak what you want. Keep your eyes on the issue.
